OUM SHATT RECORD RELEASE SHOW

Oum Shatt, das 2013 gegründete lose Kollektiv um Jonas Poppe, veröffentlicht mehr als ein Jahr nach ihrer Single ‘Power to the Women of the Morning Shift’, die ihnen bereits internationale Aufmerksamkeit beschert hatte, ihr erstes, selbstbetiteltes Album
(Oum Shatt – selftitled . Snowhite Records.

More than a year after Oum Shatt’s single “Power to the Women of the Morning Shift”, which has already bestowed international attention, festival performances (Electric Picnic, Transmusicales, Fusion, Electron etc.) and much radio play upon them, the loose collective founded in 2013 by Jonas Poppe are releasing their first, eponymous, album. Contributors include, among others, Kreuzberg renaissance man Chris Imler (Golden Showers, Die Türen, Jens Friebe, etc.), as well as Hannes Lehmann (previously Mina, Contriva) and Jörg Wolschina. The album was recorded by Norman Nitzsche (in Butterama Recording Center) und partially mixed by Tad Klimp (Fenster). Like the single, the album eschews popular genres and creates its own style using purified rock’n’roll, discreetly interwoven Arabic harmonies and hypnotic rhythms from various, partially self-crafted, percussive elements. Oum Shatt’s debut is an analog, geometric dance-construct; in arrangement modern and transparent, but evocative of a past that had never existed. There are references to 70’s Turkish psychedelic music (‘Gold to Straw’, ‘Ya Ya Ya’), American surf (‘Bangladesh’), but also borrowings from new wave (‘Trains, Trains’), early electronic music or film soundtracks. Jonas Poppe’s deep voice, choirs and odd samples, as well as the (occasionally modified) Phrygian scale, on which most of the songs are based, occasionally give the album a mystical sound, that often stretches out towards the end of the song like a spiral, while seeming simultaneously to thicken. Lyrically Oum Shatt connect love and politics, sex and crisis, massacre and escape, and hope and dilemma to a rather gloomy picture, paired with laconic humour under the surface. The album is released on 27th May 2016 on Snowhite.
